It's the season of unpredictable weather. There have already been some major hail storms in the areas we serve - especially in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, and throughout Ohio. Here are some tips on what to do when you experience storm damage to your roof.
Filing an Insurance Claim:
1. LOCATE YOUR POLICY
Locate your homeowners insurance and policy number.
Insurance Company
Policy Number
Claim Number (write it down)
2. FILE YOUR CLAIM
Place a phone call to your insurance agent to receive specific details of your policy and correct filing procedure. You may choose to file your claim online, by visiting your Insurance company’s website. Use the space above to write you claim number.
3. MEET WITH YOUR AGENT AND OUR SALES REPRESENTATIVE
After your claim has been filed you will receive a phone call within 24-48 hours to schedule an appointment with your insurance claim adjuster. At this point in the claim process please give your insurance adjuster your Sales Representative’s contact information to avoid scheduling conflicts. It is in your best interest to have your Sales Representative present, as they will make sure you receive everything you are entitled to.
4. INSURANCE ADJUSTER ITEMIZES THE DETAILS OF YOUR JOB
Once your Sales Representative and Insurance adjuster have an agreement on the scope of work that needs to be restored at your home, your claim is now approved. Your insurance adjuster will issue paper work that itemizes the work that needs to be completed for your project. Have your Sales Representative review the paper work before accepting your insurance agreement to ensure accuracy of the insurance estimate.
5. YOUR INSURANCE CHECK IS ISSUED
Your insurance company will now issue a check for work to be performed. This check is often made out to yourself and your mortgage company. Your Sales Representative can help you through the correct procedure of endorsement by your mortgage company.

When it comes to installing or replacing siding, most homeowners must consider the decision of vinyl siding versus alumninum siding. These days, more and more people choose vinyl siding. In fact, some estimates say that vinyl siding now makes up over 80% of siding installed. Here are a couple of reasons to choose vinyl over aluminum siding:
1. Color - Vinyl siding is made with the color that is solid throughout the material. Aluminum, on the other hand, is metal with an enamel paint finish. This means that if your siding gets scratched, vinyl will keep the same color (most likely making the scratch invisible) whereas with aluminum siding the enamel can be scraped off leaving the natural metallic color showing through.
2. Denting - Aluminum siding can dent (think of it as similar to the metal on a car door). This can leave very unattractive sections on the exterior of your house that are difficult and/or expensive to repair. Vinyl is dent resistent so your siding will continue to look like new for many years.
If you are in the Columbus, Cincinnati, or Atlanta areas and have any questions on siding materials or installation, just give us a call. We're happy to help.

When replacing a roof, one of the first decisions is what type of roofing shingles to choose. There are many materials to choose from, but here is a quick run-down of the most common:
1. Asphalt Shingles - Asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing material. They come in many styles and colors, are relatively durable and are very cost-effective. They also work well in cold and snowy climates such as Columbus and Cincinnati. At Kaiser, we typically recommend 30-year shingles, meaning that they have a 30-year warranty. Customers who want even more durability can choose the 40-year shingles for a slightly higher price.
2. Slate Shingles - Slate shingles are known for their durability and style. However, they are a premium material so are relatively expensive. If you plan to be in your house or building for 50+ years, slate could be cost-effective in the long-run.
3. Rubber Roofs / Flat Roofs - Many businesses and apartment buildings have flat roofs. For these types of buildings, you'll probably want to go with a rubber roofing material. If you live in a climate with a lot of ice and snow, make sure that your rubber roof is installed and maintained by a professional roofing contractor. In wintery conditions, snow and water can easily collect on flat roofs and seep in through any small holes or cracks.
4. Specialty Shingles - While less common, there are dozens of other shingle options, including Spanish tiles, cedar shakes, and concrete shingles. While these types of shingles can be very stylish and have specific benefits, they tend to be specific to certain regions and climates. For instance, Spanish tiles are common in the southwest and do best in warm, dry climates. Cedar shakes, on the other hand can be durable and attractive, but are not appropriate for climates with a high fire hazard.

If you are unsure which shingles you should choose, give Kaiser Siding & Roofing a call at 1-877-21-ROOF-1. We'd be happy to help you find the right roofing material.

If you're like most home and business owners, you probably tend to put off major home and building repairs until the spring or summer. However, winter is often the best time for roof repairs. Here's why:
1. Damage to roofs is often caused by winter elements such as ice, snow and high winds. By getting a roofing contractor to look at your roof in the winter months, you can often diagnose small problems before they become big and expensive. If you wait for warmer weather, your first hint that something is wrong might be a leak in your ceiling meaning that a lot of damage has already been done.
2. Roofing contractors are often less busy in the winter months meaning that you can get your roof repairs taken care of quickly and easily.
Don't put off important repairs or inspections just because there's snow on your roof...Snow can easily be shoveled off.

Cold weather can be tough on roofs. One risk that winter brings is ice dams. These occur when ice on your roof melts and the water gets trapped by ice or snow. The water then makes its way through your shingles to the inside of your house or attic where it can cause all sorts of damage if it isn't caught early. Popular Mechanics has a great illustration of how ice dams form:

If you notice leaks around your house and it is or has been snowing, your roof may have developed an ice dam. If you suspect that you could have an ice dam, act quickly. Call a roofer (preferably Kaiser!) as soon as possible. The problem can be diagnosed for only a small fee and the faster you get it taken care of, the more money you'll save on roof and ceiling repairs.
